How to Make an Enchanting Table in Minecraft

Enchanting Table Recipe

You need 1 book, 2 diamonds, and 4 regular obsidian. Use a crafting table, with three obsidian across the bottom row, and place the materials like this:

A book takes 3 paper and 1 leather. Mine the obsidian with a diamond or netherite pickaxe; crying obsidian does not work in this recipe. If diamonds are the bottleneck, follow How to Find Diamonds before building the room.

Exact level-30 bookshelf layout

Use 15 bookshelves to reach maximum table power. Each must be a valid regular bookshelf placed one block away from the table, leaving a one-block air gap between the shelf and table. A simple top-down layout is:

T is the enchanting table, B is a bookshelf, and the dots are the clear gap or doorway. Shelves can be at the same height as the table or one block higher. You can distribute the 15 shelves across those two valid levels, but extra shelves do not raise the maximum offer above level 30.

Keep the gap clear. Carpet, torches, snow layers, plants, and other blocks between a shelf and the table can prevent that shelf from contributing. Chiseled bookshelves are decorative/storage blocks and do not increase enchanting power.

How the three offers spend levels and lapis

Place an enchantable item in the first slot and lapis lazuli in the second. The interface shows three offers. The bottom offer can require the player to have level 30 when all 15 shelves are active, but selecting it consumes 3 experience levels and 3 lapis, rather than removing all 30 levels.

The displayed enchantment is a preview of one result. The item may receive other compatible enchantments that are not shown before selection. If the offers are poor, enchant a cheap item or book to advance the table's offer seed, then check again.

Fix a table that will not show level 30

Check these in order:

1. Count 15 regular bookshelves; chiseled shelves do not count.
2. Confirm every shelf is exactly one air block away from the table.
3. Remove carpet, torches, snow, trapdoors, plants, and decorations from the gap.
4. Check shelf height. A shelf far below or more than one block above the table will not supply power.
5. Confirm the character has 30 levels. A full-power table cannot display a usable level-30 offer to a player below that requirement.
6. Remove and replace a suspect shelf, then reopen the table to refresh the interface.

Java and Bedrock scope

The recipe, 15-shelf maximum, lapis slot, and experience requirement apply to current Java and Bedrock releases. The interface presentation can differ, but a blocked gap causes the same practical failure: the table receives less bookshelf power than expected.

How many bookshelves do you need for level 30?

Use 15 valid regular bookshelves. More than 15 does not increase maximum table power.

Can bookshelves touch the enchanting table?

No. Leave one block of clear air between the table and each shelf.

Can you use crying obsidian?
